Comments - Fantastic scene depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress, and other troops to the east and west along the coast. At the appointed time, all three attacked, with Yoshitsune and his men rushing down the hill at Hiyodorigoe, battling on horseback and on foot with their Taira enemies. At left, the occupants of the palace collect belongings and hurry towards a ship waiting to take them to safety. Several of the beauties serving as palace guards carry naginata, their sleeves tied back with sashes. Cherry trees covered with pink blossoms rise above the stone walls of the fortress. A great design filled with wonderful detail and attractive color, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
