Using Floor Mats for Shields in the Kagoshima War, 1877

Comments - Terrific battle scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel samurai using straw floor mats as shields as they fight against Meiji Imperial troops. At left, soldiers in black uniforms fire on the warriors, shots streaking across the sky. A few rebels rush forward swinging swords while others use the bundled tatami mats to shelter them as they push ahead. A wounded samurai lies bleeding on the ground at left, and clouds of smoke drift across the battlefield. A dramatic triptych, nicely detailed with fine line work and bokashi shading in the clouds.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Very slight soiling, a few light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
