Beauty and Seven Street Knights, 1889

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting seven otokodate or street knights beneath a blossoming cherry tree. An inset in the center depicts a beauty who appears in the guise of a street knight as well, with a sword at her side and a shakuhachi flute at her back. Each of the men wears a kimono that is violet at the top with olive green and white checks below, tied with a blue obi. They exchange unhappy frowns and grimaces with one another, while the fellow in the center scowls angrily up at the woman. The figures are set off by a deep red sky with cherry blossoms overhead. A handsome design with expressive figures.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of two vertical folds, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
