Mirror of Magical Heroes, 1884

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych depicting a gathering of magicians calling up supernatural creatures. At right, the beauty Shiranui smiles over her shoulder as she unrolls a scroll with a large spider sitting on it. Ichikawa Danjuro IX appears as the young magician and thief Jiraiya at left, gripping a shakujou, a pilgrim's staff topped with a ringed finial. Jiraiya practiced toad magic, and has conjured up an enormous toad to assist him. The men are surrounded with fantastic animals, including a giant snail, a dragon, a tiger and a bat. A terrific dramatic image, with expressive faces and fine detail, including faint embossing in the beauty's white kimono collar.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, slight rubbing at edges, small stain. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
