Kabuki Drama with Foxfires, 1885

Comments - Interesting triptych featuring two scenes from a kabuki play. A couple is shown in the center against a deep red background, the nobleman frowning as he looks up at his companion. A dark night scene appears on either side, with a man at left scowling angrily and clenching a blue cloth as he stares over his shoulder at a matron and a young boy. She tilts the child's chin up as she looks at him, biting anxiously on a handkerchief. Supernatural red and orange foxfires dance in the sky above stacks of grain, with trees and houses in dark silhouette along the horizon. A handsome design with large colorful figures and a dramatic format.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A few small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling and ink offsetting, a few light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
