Series; Portraits of Sansho

Portraits of Sansho - Handsome design from a series by Toshihide depicting Ichikawa Danjuro IX, one of the most popular and successful kabuki actors of the Meiji era. Sansho was one of his stages names and also a poetry name, hence the title of the series. His career bridged the gap between the Edo and Meiji eras, helping kabuki transition into the modern era. These bold portraits beautifully capture the famous actor in a variety of roles, from brash samurai to jealous women. Many feature deluxe embellishments, such as burnishing or embossing. A rarely seen series and a great choice for a kabuki enthusiast.

Special detail - Embossing in the white kimono, allover embossing in the background, burnishing in the black obi and ribs of the umbrella.
