The Subscription List, 1872

Comments - Fantastic scene from the famous kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). Yoshitsune and his men, including his loyal retainer Benkei, have disguised themselves as monks to cross the border. Here they are confronted by the noblemen Togashi, who has been charged with intercepting them. They tell him they are collecting funds for temple restoration, so the suspicious nobleman asks Benkei to read a list of the contributors. Thinking quickly, he reads a fake subscription list from a scroll. Here Benkei angrily snatches the scroll away from the prying eyes of Togashi. The young Yoshitsune sits at left, holding a walking staff and wearing a woven hat. The actors include Iwai Hanshiro VIII as Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Benkei, and Ichikawa Sadanji I as Togashi. Nice large figures with vibrant color, bordered by a simulated black lacquer frame. Includes burnishing in the black robe and caps, and the frame.
