Series; The Eight Aspects of Buddha in Modern Day Sketches

Beauty Rolling up a Scroll, 1860 - Interesting design from an unusual Kunisada II series featuring modern comparisons with episodes from the life of Buddha. Here, a beauty kneels on a cushion as she rolls up a scroll. She looks warily over her shoulder at the nobleman standing behind her, who seems distraught, holding his sleeve to his chest. A candle burns in a lamp with a glass shade, and other scrolls rest on a nearby black lacquer desk. The background is softly shaded form blue gray to white to green. A handsome design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Includes faint embossing in the white kimono trim and a dusting of mica across the top of the image.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small loss and thinning along lower right edge, small hole and thinning spot, repaired. A couple spots, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
