Bando Shuka I as Narukami and Bando Takesaburo I as Taemanosuke, 1854

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait featuring Bando Shuka I as the nun Narukami and Bando Takesaburo I as Taemanosuke. Narukami has imprisoned the dragon of rain in a waterfall by casting a spell, causing a serious drought. The handsome young Taemanosuke attempts to seduce her to break the spell. She leans over an armrest, smiling happily as she listens to him playing a flute, while he regards her warily. The water fall rushes down behind them a shimenawa or sacred rope hanging across it. A handsome design, nicely composed and detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
