The Seven Mashiba Heroes, 1866

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting warriors battling gathered around a daimyo. During the Edo era, ukiyo-e artists were prohibited from using the real names of samurai, especially those of the Toyotomi Clan. To get around this rule, artists used false names. Here, "The Seven Mashiba Heroes" refers to the "The Seven Spears of Shizugatake," a legendary group of seven famous generals serving Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was also known as Hashiba or Mashiba Hideyoshi. In this scene, Hideyoshi sits in the center, surrounded by warriors in armor and one man in court clothing at lower left, who seems to be arguing with the daimyo, gesturing and frowning as he looks up. The other men exchange angry glances. A handsome scene with expressive faces and fine detail in the armor.
