Flowering in the East: The Crown Prince at Play, 1880

Comments - Terrific scene of the Meiji Crown Prince at play in the Imperial Palace. He rides in an elegant miniature carriage with a dragon on the side, pulled by a team of toy horses. An older girl and a young boy pull the shafts of the carriage, while another girl and a beauty push the vehicle forward. Ladies-in-waiting follow along, one carrying his sword, another his plumed hat, and a third the Meiji chrysanthemum flag. The emperor watches with a smile at far left, while the empress stands at far right carrying a folding fan with a red tassel. Wonderful detail in the sumptuous palace setting and fine kimono fabrics, including light embossing in the white kimono collars. A great image from Meiji era Japan.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown
