Yugiri and Uzaemon Dancing; Garden Scene from Kagamiyama

Untitled series of parodies of kabuki scenes, circa early 1886
Opening at only $59!

Parodies of Kabuki Scenes - In this chuban size series first published in early 1886, Yoshitoshi depicted parodies of famous scenes from popular kabuki plays. His witty and comic designs turn the tables on classic kabuki dramas that would have been easily recognizable by his audience. The publisher Fukuda reissued the series in 1897, a year after the artist's death. The series is not well documented, and only 12 subjects out of an estimated 22 are documented in Keyes. We've only come across a handful of these images before. The prints were designed to be cut and sold as two separate chuban prints, so it's rare to find uncut pages. An interesting choice for a collector.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - Page size 14 5/8" x 10 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light horizontal centerfold. Remnants of paper hinge mounts on reverse at top corner. Small hole, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
