Court Ladies Practicing Sericulture, 1884

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting ladies of the Imperial Court practicing sericulture. At right, beauties use feathers to transfer eggs onto a sheet of paper on a black lacquer tray. In the center, women chop mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms, with several beauties at left scattering the leaves over wicker trays. At bottom left, two women pluck cocoons and put them into a large basket. At upper right, the cocoons are boiled in water to release the silk thread, which is wound onto wheels. The rooms overlook a beautiful garden with a bridge over a pond and colorful flowers sheltered beneath a checked canopy. A wonderful look at this age-old process, nicely colored and detailed with embossing in the white kimono.
