Courtesans in Spring

Comments - Handsome scene of courtesans in a teahouse overlooking a garden in spring. At right, a seated beauty writes a poem slip, smiling as she looks over her shoulder at a woman holding a moon lute. The courtesan standing behind them wears a striking blue kimono patterned with a rooster perched atop a drum and autumn vines. The beauty sitting in the center holds a fly whisk, and wears an unusual robe with a design of a Buddhist deity and a dragon. The room opens onto a view of blossoming cherry trees, with guests strolling about the fenced grounds. An attractive design with vibrant color, and burnishing in the black robe and obi.

Artist - Hiroshige III (1843 - 1894)

Image Size - 14" x 28 5/8" + margins as shown
