Comments - Attractive scene of a poetry writing contest at the Imperial Palace. In the foreground, the Meiji Empress and two princesses are surrounded by ladies-in-waiting writing poetry. The empress stands at far right holding a folding fan, smiling down at her companions. The women are gathered around low writing tables with brushes and poem slips in hand as they compose their verses. In the next room at upper left, the emperor sits on a low platform, his face hidden by a hanging blind. Beauties are seated around the room with their writing materials ready. The rooms overlook a garden pond framed by blossoming cherry trees, with walkways at top center leading into the distance. A handsome design, beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim.
