Sawamura Tossho I as Kobayakawa Tatewaki, 1838

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of Sawamura Tossho I as Kobayakawa Tatewaki, about to commit suicide as he grips the rope of a temple bell in one hand and his sword in the other. He pauses as a serpent appears at lower right, supernatural flames emitting from its mouth. He glares angrily as he watches the snake, waiting to see what it does. A fascinating image.
