Sawamura Tossho II as Ushiwaka no Denji, 1867

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho II as Ushiwaka no Denji in the play "Atari Kuji Mansei Soga." He grips a scaffolding pole as he tries to break free from the grasp of the guard behind him, who thrusts an iron truncheon across his chest. His blue checked kimono hangs open at his waist, and his hair is tied into a knot at the back of his head. The building under construction fills the background. A dramatic design with large figures and a bold composition.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight soiling, small rubbed spot, a few light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
