Storm Wind at Togakushi, 1868

Series; Eight Views from Fine Tales of Warriors

Storm Wind at Togakushi, 1868 - Interesting scene of an enormous storm wind conjured up by the famous demon of Mt. Togakushi. The nobleman Taira no Koremochi joined some beautiful women in picnicking on Mt. Togakushi while hunting there. He fell asleep and dreamed that the god of war was warning him that one of the women was actually the demon Kiji, who intended to kill him. When he awoke she was leering down at him in her true form, so he used his sword to vanquish her. Here, the wind sends two retainers tumbling head over heels to the ground, one man hiding his face with his hand in fright. A maple tree frames the night sky above, with leaves blown across the scene. Nicely detailed with a dusting of mica across the top of the sky.
