Series; Famous Places in Tokyo

Hiroshige III's Famous Places in Tokyo - Attractive design from a series depicting famous places in Tokyo, published over several years starting in 1868. Hiroshige III includes traditional locations and activities, as well as modern Meiji sights, such as Western style buildings and transportation. These lively scenes are filled with wonderful detail, carefully rendered with vibrant color and soft shading. A great look at the rapid changes taking place in Tokyo during the Meiji era.

Yasukuni Shrine, 1902 - Attractive scene of a mother and son visiting Yasukuni Shrine in Ueno Park. The Meiji Emperor founded Yasukuni Shrine to honor those who had died in the service of Japan. The beauty smiles as she leads him by the hand, carrying a lime green umbrella. The boy wears a Western style sailor suit and a cap with ribbon streamers, along with red striped socks and black lace-up shoes. A statue of the military leader Omura Masujiro, who assisted in the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, towers above the figures, with a torii gate leading a building at left and cherry trees covered with pink blossoms. An interesting spring subject, detailed with burnishing in the beauty's hair, the sailor suit, and the black coat.
