Series; Manners and Customs of the Six Jewel Rivers

The Ide Jewel River: Hanaogi of the Ogiya - Lovely portrait of the courtesan Hanaogi of the Ogiya from a series pairing beautiful women with the famous Six Jewel Rivers. She stands beside a bench, smiling as she reaches out to take a pipe offered to her. She wears an outer kimono patterned with cherry blossoms and swirling water ripples and trimmed with layers of blue brocade, worn over a red tie-dyed under robe. Her red obi features medallions encircled by sacred jewels. The aizuri-e inset at upper left, in the shape of the Toshidama seal used by artists of the Utagawa School, encloses a view of the Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro, with a woman washing cloth in the water beneath a tree. A classic Edo era beauty design, nicely detailed.
