Yakko with a Trunk, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of a yakko or low-ranking servant standing at a garden gate, a large wicker trunk strapped to his back. He looks to the side with an angry frown, holding onto the straps over his shoulders. A woman's kimono sleeve trails from the side of the trunk, suggesting that perhaps a beauty may be trapped inside. A blossoming cherry tree frames the evening sky above. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
