Torii Suneemon at Nagashino Castle, 1893

Comments - Dramatic scene of the ashigaru or foot soldier Torii Suneemon being captured by the forces of Takeda Katsuyori during the siege of Nagashino Castle. The castle belonged to Suneemon's master, Okudaira Nobumasa, and when it was attacked by Katsuyori's army, Suneemon undertook a daring effort to reach Tokugawa Ieyasu for aid by sneaking through the lines. After successfully reaching Ieyasu, he was caught trying to return to the castle. Here, several guards try to restrain him as he tosses one to the ground alongside the moat. A daimyo watches from horseback at right. A great image, beautifully detailed and shaded. We've never come across this Chikanobu subject before.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 27 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning, a few ink marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
