Third National Industrial Exposition, 1890

Comments - Terrific view of the Third National Industrial Exposition at Ueno Park in Tokyo in 1890, the grounds bustling with visitors. The Meiji emperor stands at right in a black military uniform with a silver sash, accompanied by the young prince and surrounded by dignitaries. The arched entrance to the exposition behind them is adorned with crossed Japanese flags. At lower left, three women each wear the latest Western fashions: a bustled dress with overskirt and fitted bodice, and a bonnet adorned with flowers and ribbons. Behind them, a large torii gate leads to a shrine. Colorful flags and paper lanterns hang overhead, including an America flag, and the cherry trees in the background are covered with bright pink blossoms. A fascinating historic subject, nicely detailed and vibrantly colored. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms.
