The Seven Lucky Gods Planting and Harvesting Rice, 1881

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the Seven Lucky Gods planting and harvesting rice. At lower right, Fukurokuju plows a flooded field with his deer. Just above him, two boys in Chinese dress plant seedlings in the water. At bottom center, children cut the grain with a sickle, while behind them, Bishamonten carries bundles of rice tied to his pole arm. At lower left, Ebisu and Jurojin handle straw-wrapped bales of rice while Daikoku adds one to the storehouse above. Beside them, a boy balances a large red sea bream or snapper atop his head, a fish usually carried by Ebisu. A money tree covered with gold coins frames the scene, and a crane flies through the red sky at right, with Mt. Fuji in the distance. A lively illustration of Japan's beloved Seven Lucky Gods. Includes burnishing in the black caps, boots, and kimono trim. We've never seen this Chikanobu subject before.
