Series; Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan

Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan - Yoshitoshi's late series "Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan" highlights important figures throughout the history of Imperial Japan, from both legend and real life. These terrific images include valiant samurai, brave retainers, loyal wives, and fantastic demons. Beautifully drawn with a wonderful sense of realism and finely printed with rich jewel-tone colors, these designs are a great example of Yoshitoshi's mature artistic style. A great choice for a Yoshitoshi collector.

Karukaya Doshin Refuses to Recognize Ishidomaru, 1881 - Fine illustration of the young boy Kato Ishidomaru reuniting with his father, who has taken the priesthood. His father was Kato Sayemon Shigeuji, a daimyo of Kyushu, who later fled his station and title and became the priest Karukaya Doshin to escape his jealous wife. His son identified him by a birthmark, but he initially refused to recognize him. Finally, the father relented, but made his son promise to keep the truth from his mother. A terrific scene from the tale showing the young boy pleading with his father, taking him by the wrist, as the monk touches his chin, a frightened expression on his face. A beautiful print from the series with fine shading and handsome wood grain impression in the background.
