Kadomatsu: Daimyo, Taro Kaja, and Uncle, 1865

Series; Auspicious Plays

Kadomatsu: Daimyo, Taro Kaja, and Uncle, 1865 - Handsome image of the kabuki actors Ichikawa Yaozo VI as the daimyo, Nakamura Kanzaburo XIII as Taro Kaja, and Nakamura Nakazo III (formerly Tsuruzo), as the Uncle performing the kadomatsu dance. At lower right, the daimyo waves a fan, wearing a voluminous blue kamishimo patterned with waterwheels over a darker blue kimono with plaid trim, and a tall court cap. The fellow at top center hops about on one foot, watching the nobleman with a slight frown, while the seated man below grimaces angrily. A traditional New Year's decoration of pine and bamboo frames the scene at right, with blossoming plum branches overhead. An attractive subject, nicely colored, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. We've never seen this design before.
