Taira no Tomomori at the Tokaiya, 1867

Comments - Handsome illustration of the "Tokaiya" scene from the popular kabuki play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura." Here, the great general Taira no Tomomori appears outside the Tokaiya Inn along the shore at Daimotsu Bay, just before the Battle of Dan-no-ura. He wears an embossed white vest over his suit of armor and pants patterned with waves, and a court cap topped with horns and the Taira butterfly crest. He grips a naginata, gesturing with his other hand as he scowls angrily. At right, the child Emperor Antoku stands beside his wet nurse, Suke-no-Tsubone, who rests one hand protectively at the child's back. At left, Yoshitsune and the warrior monk Benkei watch from behind the rocks, while another samurai tumbles backwards onto the ground at left. Behind them, ships are gathering in the harbor for the upcoming confrontation between the Taira and the Minamoto. A great scene with expressive figures and wonderful detail, framed by a blue and white border of waterwheels and cherry blossoms. Includes embossing in Suke-no-Tsubone's white kimono.
