Taira no Tomomori and the Child Emperor

Comments - Terrific kabuki diptych depicting the leader of the Taira fleet, Taira no Tomomori, during the naval battle at Dan-no-ura. Facing defeat, Tomomori will commit suicide by tying himself to an anchor and leaping into the sea rather than be captured by the Minamoto. Tomomori wears a kamishimo patterned with the Taira butterfly crest and a tall court cap with horns attached. He grips a naginata with one hand as he gestures toward the child Emperor Antoku at right. An agitated warrior grimaces at left, his long hair flowing wildly around his face as he forces a man to the ground before him, gripping his wrist as he twists the fellow's arm behind his back. Nicely composed with large, expressive figures, detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Tear at edge, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, slight rubbing at edges, light stain, small paper remnant at lower left edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
