Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The Fox Tadanobu

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych of the young samurai Tadanobu in the play "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura." He is actually a kitsune, a magical fox, disguised as Yoshitsune's retainer Tadanobu, and he reveals his true nature at left as he leaps with his knees tucked up and his hands held out like paws. He grins at the surprised Lady Shizuka, who smiles back at him. Dressed in elegant robes, Yoshitsune watches him from the right with a concerned expression, holding a drum made from fox skin. A lively scene with vibrant color and bold patterns, the large figures set off by a deep blue background bordered by a simulated black lacquer frame. Includes light embossing in Tadanobu's white fur kimono.
