47 Ronin, Act 7: At the Ichiriki Teahouse, 1887

Comments - Dramatic scene from Act 7 of the classic 47 ronin play, "Kanadehon Chushingura." At the Ichiriki Teahouse, the ronin Teraoka Hiemon angrily raises his sword to attack the courtesan Okaru after suspecting her of spying on Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin. She tosses a packet of tissues at him as she stares at him in fright, clutching the end of her obi over her sleeve. The papers fly through the air as Yuranosuke watches solemnly from the right. Behind him, a low red lacquer table holds a platter of fish and a bowl of food, and the room opens onto a courtyard garden. At upper right, a lantern with a crescent moon opening hangs from a pine tree. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Okaru and Nakamura Shikan IV as Teraoka Hiemon. A lively design with handsome detail in the setting and fabrics.
