The Temple Dedicated to Kannon in Asakusa, 1854

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting a group of kabuki actors offstage, paying a visit to the Kannon Temple in Asakusa in their spare time. In the center, a beauty shields her eyes with her hand as she looks up at the sky. Several of the other actors look skywards as well, with one man at far right pointing at the sky. The men wear short coats over their kimono, and all of the figures wear tall wooden geta sandals. Surrounded by tall pine trees, the red temple building rises above the rooftops, detailed with ornate carving on the gable end and corners. Ichikawa Kodanji IV and Bando Shuka I appear in the right panel. Beautiful detailed and colored, with soft shading in the background. A great design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. A few wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
