Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nagoya Sanza and the Maid Okuni, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of the samurai Nagoya Sanza, a samurai who was disgraced after the evil Fuwa Banzaemon stole a valuable scroll under his care. Sanza tugs on the end of the beauty's sash with a glum frown, a pipe extending from beneath his other sleeve. Okuni looks up at him with a playful grin as she kneels on the floor, hiding something on the floor beside her. Nearby, an unfolded paper holds several combs. A mirror rests atop a black lacquer stand at right, and woodblock prints decorate the back wall. At left, a hanging wooden shelf holds pots above a brazier full of ashes below, the plaster of the wall cracked and missing. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III as the maid Okuni and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Nagoya Sanza. An intriguing design with a nicely detailed interior setting.
