Smiling Beauty and Samruai, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of a couple in an elegant interior. The beauty kneeling at left holds a lantern in her hand, smiling as she looks back over her shoulder at her companion. The samurai regards her with a sober frown, one hand tucked inside his geometric print kamishimo. The wall behind them features a lovely scene of a phoenix in flight beneath a blossoming cherry tree. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. A nicely detailed design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 19" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. Horizontal centerfold. Thinning spot, a few small wormholes, repaired. Soiling and staining, rubbing at edges, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
