Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The Tokugawa Shoguns

Comments - Handsome group portrait of the fifteen shoguns of the Tokugawa Shogunate. At top center, the first Shogun Ieyasu sits on a platform, wearing a black robe with a burnished pattern of the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa clan. The fifteenth and final Tokugawa Shogun, Yoshinobu, sits on a chair at lower left, wearing a black military uniform and tall cap. Kneeling at bottom center is the young Tokugawa Ietsugu, who began shogun at the age of three and sadly died at age six. Two other figures wear armor, while the rest are attired in court clothing. A handsome depiction of this noble lineage, detailed with embossing in the white kimono and the white fur covering the chair seat at lower left.
