Monk with a Scroll, 1852 - Interesting kabuki scene depicting a kneeling monk at left holding up the end of a scroll, a rather agitated expression on his face. The young samurai standing behind up raises his sleeve up as if hiding behind it, looking to the side with a slight grimace. The courtesan at right recoils, leaning back with a look of alarm. The scroll stretches across the floor to her side, its subject portraits of Heian era noblemen and women. A cushion, a lacquer armrest, and an elegant lacquer tobacco set rest on the floor of the room behind the group. In the distance at upper right, bonfires light up the side of Mt. Daimonji for the annual summer Bon Festival. Nice expressive figures with wonderful detail in the setting.
