Original Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882) Japanese Woodblock Print
Angry Samurai

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting two separate scenes from a play. At left, a samurai looking up from the letter he is reading with an angry frown. He wears a purple vest over a fine suit of armor, a white sash tied around his forehead. At right, a young warrior throws his hand up in annoyance, wearing a dragon print vest over his armor. A nobleman sits at right, watching him with a frown, his hands clasped together atop a folding fan in his lap. The large figures are set off by bright blue and red background, bordered with a simulated black lacquer frame. Nicely detailed with a burnished pattern in the purple vest and burnishing on the black folding fan.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Two vertical folds. A couples small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
