Tea Ceremony, 1890 - Lovely triptych depicting upper-class ladies attending a tea ceremony. At lower left, the hostess mixes the tea in a tea bowl using a whisk. She kneels beside a floor brazier holding a container of water with a dipper resting across the top of it. She wears an elegant white kimono with a design of flowers, red ribbons, and geometric patterned bands, the white areas embossed with a stylized wave pattern. Her guests sit quietly in a semicircle around the room, watching patiently. At upper right, a folding screen is decorated with a scene of birds and flowering plants along a narrow stream. Detailed with additional embossing in the white kimono collars and the background of the screen, and burnishing in the black lacquer trim around the brazier. A beautiful illustration of this timeless Japanese ceremony, attractively colored. We've never come across this subject before.
