Watonai and Kinshojo, 1883

Comments - Terrific scene from a kabuki play based on the novel "The Battles of Coxinga" by Chikamatsu. The warrior Watonai traveled to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty, asking her his half-sister, Kinshojo, to plead his case with her husband, General Kanki. Here, strikes a bold pose as he flings his hat into the air, gripping a sword in his other hand. His red stage makeup gives him a fierce appearance, and his red armored shirt and boldly patterned purple and white kimono add strong graphic patterning. The beauty stands at right, looking sorrowfully at the samurai. She wears elegant robes trimmed with layers of colorful ruffles, and an ornate headdress topped with a golden phoenix and trimmed with beaded fringe. A large pink and white blossom appears in the background at left with the stem and leaves rendered in gray calligraphic strokes. A great, dynamic design.
