Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Officers Surrounding Ashikaga Sanshichiro Yoshitaka, 1853

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Kozotte Kuruwa Mimasu no Datezome" of officers surrounding the young samurai Ashikaga Sanshichiro Yoshitaka. He stands in the center, looking down with a mournful expression as he holds an ornate pipe, wearing a black kimono with a beautiful burnished pattern. The other men crouch around him with their swords held upright, dressed in matched violet kimono and green print arm protectors. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII appears as Yoshitaka. A rare horizontal diptych, an unusual format that is seldom seen.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. Vertical centerfold in each panel. A few small losses at edges, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
