Original Hiromitsu Nakazawa (1874 - 1964) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from the Tale of Genji

Hiromitsu Nakazawa's Tale of Genji - Beautiful print from a 1913 series by Hiromitsu Nakazawa illustrating the epic "Tale of Genji," a classic in Japanese literature and one of the first recorded novels. The series follows the hero, the young Prince Genji, through his love affairs and interactions with the elegant women of the upper class. These charming designs recreate the drama of the tale, depicting Genji and companions in striking and significant moments from the story. Although depicting traditional subjects, Nakazawa's designs reflect the modern sensibilities of the shin-hanga or new print movement that emerged in Japan in the early years of the 20th century. Printed in soft colors, these works have a lovely watercolor feel to them. These lyrical and atmospheric scenes are beautifully drawn with fine delicate line work and wonderful detail. A rare, pre-Kanto Earthquake shin-hanga print and a great choice for a collector.
