Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Rivals Meeting Unexpectedly, 1859

Comments - Interesting scene of two rivals meeting unexpectedly when their paths cross in the Yoshiwara one night. The fellow at left leans back with a scowl as he lifts the edge of his hat for a better view. He wears a blue kimono with a pattern of fences on it. The ronin at right glares back at him with a frown, dressed in a kimono composed of colorful geometric print squares alternating with wide black bands featuring red and white flowers. Text runs across the top of the print. Kawarazaki Gonjuro I plays the ronin at right. Expressive figures with nice detail.

Artist - Edo era artist (unsigned)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. Slight separation along vertical centerfold, repaired. Slight soiling, a few light creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
