Battling the Wicked Magician Orochimaru, 1855

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of two magicians battling each other in a scene from the tale of the thief and folk hero, Jiraiya. At left, the wicked Orochimaru, who is actually the son of the Giant Snake, conjures up an enormous serpent to help him. He stands atop the back of the snake floating on a cloud of smoke, the creature flicking out its forked tongue. Orochimaru grips a scroll in one hand as he pushes up the sleeve of his kimono, his wild hair sticking up atop his head as the grimaces at his enemies. In the center, a beauty has knocked a man to the ground, holding his neck down with one hand while twisting his arm back with the other. The fellow's legs flail in the air as he falls onto his gun. At right, the magician Jiraiya brandishes his sword, ready to fight, his basket hat on the ground nearby. A fascinating subject with wonderful detail in the snake's scales and fine bokashi shading in the background.
