Sato Masakiyo's Tiger Hunt, 1860

Comments - Terrific scene of Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) and his men hunting tigers during Japan's Seven Year War with Korea. At top center, Masakiyo stands on a snow covered ledge over the river, tossing his vest off as several tigers and leopards snarl below, poised and ready to spring. At lower right, a general thrusts his sword at a tiger swimming through the rushing current towards him. A fantastic depiction of this famous story, with a dramatic natural setting and wonderful detail in the animals. We've never offered this Yoshitsuya subject before.

Artist - Yoshitsuya (1822 - 1866)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/2" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A few wormholes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases, paper slightly curled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
