Soga Brothers Ready to Attack, 1864

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers showing the young samurai ready to attack Suketsune in his hunting lodge to avenge the death of their father. From left, the actors are Iwai Shijaku II as Oiso no Tora, Bando Hikosaburo V as Soga Juro Sukenari, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Soga Goro Tokimune. The lover of Juro, the courtesan Oiso no Tora smiles at the men as she prepares to let them into the lodge, shielding the light from a lantern beneath her sleeve. At right, Goro waves his sword above his head angrily, prepared to barge in, while his older brother councils a more stealthy approach, holding Goro back with his outstretched hand. A drapery with Suketsune's crest on it flutters above the doorway at left, and a wooden fence frames the dark night sky behind them. Nice expressive figures, attractively color and detailed.
