Shinohara of the Tsuruya

Series; Seven Komachi of the Yoshiwara

Shinohara of the Tsuruya - Lovely reprint depicting Shinohara of the Tsuruya from a series pairing Yoshiwara beauties with the seven episodes in the life of the famous ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi, who was considered extremely beautiful. Shinohara smiles as she looks over her shoulder, delicately adjusting a hairpin. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth knot resembling a bow, adorned with a large comb and many hairpins. She wears a tie-dyed plum outer robe trimmed with layers of green brocade, over a red under robe with a pale blue color. Beautifully detailed with faint pink shading about the eyes and fine line work in the hair. A beautiful Utamaro portrait, rarely seen in reprint.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)
