Series; Biographies of the Loyal Retainers (Gishi meimei den), 1883

Biographies of the Loyal Retainers - Great kabuki portrait from Kunichika's 1883 series depicting actors in the roles of the famous 47 ronin in the drama "Kanadehon Chushingura." The characters are shown during the night attack on Moronao's palace, engaged in battle with the enemy or searching for Lord Moronao throughout his mansion in their quest to avenge the death of their master, Lord Hangan. Each wears the traditional ronin's black and white dogtooth bordered robe over a suit of armor. Touches of red and purple enliven the scenes, the figures set off by a softly shaded background. Some designs include embossing or a dusting of mica over the night sky. A lively and colorful series, and a nice choice for a collector interested in this classic tale of honor and revenge.
