Arguing over a Spear, 1862

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the treacherous Takechi Mitsuhide and a beauty arguing over a spear, each grabbing hold of it. The samurai frowns unhappily, lifting one sleeve above his head. He wears a striped green coat over a black kimono with a burnished pattern of writing, over a suit of armor trimmed with fringe. The beauty's green outer kimono features a striking design of herons or egrets flying in snow. A stone marker stands beneath a pine tree on the slope behind her. At left, a woman eyes the pair suspiciously as she waits outside a rundown shack with vines growing on the roof. The actors include Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Takechi Mitsuhide and Sawamura Tanosuke III as the beauty at right. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
