Samurai Triplets, 1857

Comments - Great kabuki triptych illustrating the popular drama "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. This terrific scene shows the enraged Shihei atop a court carriage, his face blue with anger, waving a staff of office above his head. Matsuomaru stands at right staring up at his master, his feet spread firmly apart. Umeomaru grips his sword at left, glaring fiercely up at the evil Shihei, his red stage makeup adding to his imposing presence. Sakuramaru kneels in the center with a worried frown. Beautiful detail in the expressive figures and the ornately decorated cart, with handsome color and fine wood grain impression in the background.
