Evening at Ryogoku in the Eastern Capital

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the Sumida River crowded with pleasure boats as residents of Edo enjoy a summertime fireworks display. Viewers pack the bridge in the foreground, with men, women, and children jostling for space. At left, a fellow hanging over the bridge railing enjoys a snack of edamame or boiled green soybeans, while in the center, a man holds a large slice of watermelon as he looks up with a happy smile. Trails of red orange sparks spiral through the dark night sky dotted with stars. A fantastic depiction of this favorite summer activity, with lively detail, capturing the energy and excitement of the scene. A great Edo era subject.
