Sounding a Drum, 1877

Comments - Intriguing scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of a rebel officer striking a drum. The leader of the rebels, Saigo Takamori, sits in a plush chair at right, clutching his hat to his chest. Smoke billows from a metal stand in the center of the room, and a woman warrior and a samurai keep watch out the window at left. Detailed with burnishing in the black uniform and fine bokashi shading in the smoke. A fascinating subject from this historic conflict.

Artist - Toshinobu (1866 - 1903)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A couple thinning spots, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, ink offsetting, paper slightly curled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
